Medical Transcriptionist Schools for Adults in California

Medical transcriptionists receive audio dictations from health care providers and transcribe the audio into text. Due to the complex medical terminology and technical issues in the process of transcribing, special training is needed in order to be certified. Several colleges in California offer coursework for adults wishing to enter this field.

    • Everest College (everest.edu) has locations all around the state of California, including Santa Ana, San Jose, San Francisco, San Bernardino and Anaheim. Although Everest does not offer a certificate in medical transcription, it does offer classes in medical billing and coding and medical administrative assistance, both of which involve medical transcription as part of the training.

    Concorde Career College

    • With locations in Garden Grove, North Hollywood, San Bernardino and San Diego, Concorde Career College (concorde.edu) offers degrees or diplomas for medical administrative assistants and medical assistants, which include courses in medical transcription.

    Kaplan College

    • Kaplan College (kaplancollege.com) has many locations all around California, including Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, North County, Palm Springs, Sacramento and Stockton. Kaplan offers a medical office specialist program that includes medical transcription.

    California State University, East Bay

    • California State University, East Bay (ce.csueastbay.edu) offers a certificate program in medical transcription. It is offered as one course that students are allowed to complete at their own pace. The cost of the course is approximately $1,625, as of 2011. This college has several campuses, with locations in Hayward, Concord, and Oakland.
