Schools for Medical Records Programs

The increased use of electronic health records systems has opened a new vista in the world of health care careers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs available as Medical Records and Health Information Technicians are expected to grow faster than average from 2008 to 2018. Technicians must be able to handle the latest software and assemble patient information including histories, examination results, tests and treatments. This requires training. Many schools offer programs that will educate future techs in medical terminology, anatomy and computer technology.
  1. South Suburban College

    • South Suburban College offers an American Health Information Management Associate certificate program for those interested in a coding and records career. Located on the main campus in South Holland, Illinois, this is a full-time day or evening program. Some courses include Intro to Medical Records, Fundamentals of Medical Terminology, Medical Terminology, ICD-9 Coding, CPT Coding, Essentials of Human Diseases and Outpatient Billing and Reimbursement. Entrance to the program requires completion of Medical Office Foundation, Human Body Structure and Computer Literacy and Applications. Graduates of the South Suburban program will be eligible for Certified Coding Associate certification.

    Brighton College

    • Brighton College is a nationally accredited school (Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council) and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. The Medical Records Specialist program offers training in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, medical records, business English and basic medical coding. This is a six and nine month course with 10 to 15 hours per week of classes. Graduates get assistance with job placement from the Brighton College career placement coordination. This service helps with cover letter and resume preparation and provides resources to guide students in finding the right position.

    Lincoln Group

    • The Lincoln Group of Schools offers a number of programs regarding careers in the health industry. Included in this program grouping is Health Information Technician. This program provides a thorough understanding of the technical skills needed for a job in medical records. The program includes studies in computer technology, basic office administration, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. Graduates will have the skills to analyze billing codes, plus store and retrieve health care data. This approach helps students with job placement after earning a degree. Possible placement options include doctor's offices, clinics and hospital environments. Most courses from Lincoln College require online participation.
