Trade Schools in West Tennessee

Western Tennessee is home to a number of trade schools, post-secondary institutions that grant certificates, diplomas and associate degrees that prepare graduates to work in a variety of industries, including health care, construction, cosmetology and computer science.     • Tennessee Technology Center at Memphis is a public trade school and a member of the State University and Community Colleges System of Tennessee. The school's degree and certificate programs include animal laboratory technology, automotive technology, cosmetology, construction technology, information technology, dental assisting, drafting, masonry, pharmacy technology, practical nursing, truck driving and welding. The school operates a secondary location at the Memphis International Airport, where the it offers aircraft mechanics and aviation programs. A number of classes are offered online.     Tennessee Academy of Cosmetology

    • A private, for-profit institution, the Tennessee Academy of Cosmetology carries the approval of the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences. The school offers 1500-hour cosmetology, 600-hour manicuring and 750-hour esthetics (skin care) programs, each of which fulfills the education requirements for Tennessee-state licensing their respective fields. For cosmetologists who already have a state license, the school also provides a 300-hour cosmetology instructor program. Day and evening classes are available, and students may study full or part-time. The school has two branches in Memphis, and each location has its own salon, where students practice with real customers to gain experience. Federal grants and loans and veteran's benefits are available for qualified students. The Tennessee Academy of Cosmetology offers lifetime job placement assistance for graduates.

    William R. Moore College of Technology

    • Funded by an endowment from the estate of a Memphis business man,
      William R. Moore College of Technology opened in 1936 and is a private, non-profit trade school. Associate and certificates are granted in industrial electricity, property maintenance, machining, computer operations and repair, welding and heating, cooling and ventilation. The school offers day and evening classes. All students must have a high school diploma or the equivalent to attend. The school participates in both federal financial aid and veteran's benefit program and has counselors to help students fill out the necessary paperwork to receive this type of funding.
