Architect Trade Schools

Jobs in architecture are expected to grow, with architects holding over 140,000 jobs in 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average yearly wage of architects is approximately $76,000, also as of 2008. In order to work in architecture, a person must have training in the field, which requires a degree, internship and certification.



Several tech colleges and trade schools across the United States can assist aspiring architects in acquiring the sufficient education needed for a successful career in architecture.
  1. New England Institute of Technology

    • Based in Warwick, Rhode Island, the New England Institute of Technology has an Associate in Science degree, offered through its Architectural Building Engineering Technology program. Courses offered in this program include Intro to Architecture and Building Technology, Introduction to Structures and Building Codes. Other areas focused on include Green Technology and Sustainable Design, two timely topics. The school focuses on the concept of architecture via teamwork.

    Island Drafting and Technical Institute

    • In Amityville, New York, the Island Drafting and Technical Institute offers an associate degree in architectural CADD drafting. Completion requires 60 credits, and the school has both day and evening classes so a student can fit the program around his or her schedule. Emphasis in this program is on drafting programs and computerization techniques.

    Herzing University

    • Herzing University has both associate and bachelor's degrees that relate to architecture. The associate degree is in drafting and design technology, where students learn the CAD system. The bachelor's program is in technology management, which builds on the associate's degree but adds in business and managerial courses. These programs are available at Herzing's Madison, Wisconsin location.

    Savannah College of Art and Design

    • With locations across the world including in Atlanta and Hong Kong, SCAD offers both a bachelor's and a master's program in architecture. The programs include lessons in environmental control and structural support. The master's program focuses on either urban or electronic design.
