The school offers a North Carolina state-approved practical nursing program at its campuses in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh. With more than 8,000 students, Durham Technical Community College is a public, two-year institution. Among the college's more than 740 academic majors is a diploma program in practical nursing. Before enrolling in nursing courses, students first complete classes in anatomy and life span development and then complete the major courses over three semesters of full-time study. As a part of the curriculum, students participate in clinical rotations at health care facilities like the Duke University Medical Center, Durham Regional Hospital and Lincoln Community Health Center. Advising, career and personal counseling are available for all students. The college provides assistance with resume and interview development for all graduates. More than 20 student organizations are located on campus for students to join, including the Student Nurse's Organization.

Located in Jacksonville, Coastal Carolina Community College opened in 1957 and has grown to an enrollment of more than 23,000 students. Before applying to the practical nursing program, students must first complete courses in anatomy, computer science, psychology and writing. Although not required for admission, preference is given to students with experience in nurse assisting or work experience. Those admitted to the program spend two terms completing the required courses and clinical rotations necessary for graduation. Eligible students can take advantage of federal grants and loans, veterans and vet spouse benefits and work-study. The school's Career Center provides job search workshops and one-on-one assistance for all students.
