Professional aviation training in Canadian aviation colleges provides career opportunities in the public and private sectors, imparting skills that can be translated into many different jobs. Aviation colleges provide certificates, degrees and professional pilot licenses--tools students need to launch their new, high-flying careers.
  1. Seneca College

    • The School of Aviation and Flight Technology at Seneca College is spread over two campuses: Newnham in North York and the Buttonville Airport Campus. The Schools of Aviation and Flight Technology offers a Bachelor of Technology degree course as part of aviation training. The course, which requires 300 instruction hours to complete, covers multi-engine airplane flight, aerospace theory, airplane design, professional pilot conduct and safe operating procedures.

      Upon completion of the course, you will be a licensed Commercial Pilot. Night school courses are available for obtaining a Private Pilot License as well. After 1,500 hours of instruction, you also receive an Airline Transport Pilot license. Seneca's School of Aviation boasts 14 planes, housed at the Buttonville Airport in Markham, Ontario. Two simulator training devices are housed at the Seneca college campus.

      Find financial aid opportunities through the Aid office at Seneca College. Citizens and permanent residents of Canada may be eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). The Ontario Special Bursary Plan (OSBP) and Canada student loans are also available to students who require monetary assistance.

      Students may use of the Career Services Centres to participate in workshops on resumes, cover letters and interviewing. Seneca also provides graduates with access to an exclusive online job board to help them get started with their career search.

    Sky Wings Aviation Academy

    • Sky Wings Aviation Academy provides training to help students obtain their private and/or commercial pilot's license. The academic campus is located 10 minutes (by land vehicle) from the aviation campus.

      The fleet of planes students use for learning includes the Cessna 172, Cessna 152, twin-engine Piper Seneca and twin-engine Piper Navajo. The instrument training program is conducted on a multi-engine flight simulator.

      Programs offered by Sky Wings include the Recreational Pilot (25 hours of flight time, 40 hours ground school), Private Pilot (six weeks for full-time students, three to four months for part time), Commercial Pilot (200 total study/flying hours) and Aviation Diploma courses. Upon completion of the diploma program, students receive a certificate in Business Management. The Aviation diploma course takes two years to complete. Sky Wings offers the Operation Job Find program to all students, career services that help pilots find the right venue to explore their new field.

      Alberta students who need financial assistance may qualify for the Student Loan program provided through the school. Other students may qualify for grants or low-interest loans. Financial assistance information and applications are available through the Student Aid Office.

    Cooking Lake Aviation Academy

    • Students at Cooking Lake Aviation Academy have the option of living in nearby Sherwood Park, where student housing is available.

      Cooking Lake offers the Recreational Pilot Permit, which allows piloting of single-engine aircraft with one passenger present and requires 25 hours of flight time and 40 hours of ground school to complete. The Private Pilot License requires 40 hours of ground school and 45 hours of flight training. For a Commercial License, Pilots are required to log 200 hours of total flight and ground school time. If you plan on obtaining multiple licenses, hours logged in one program are transferable to the next. Cooking Lake also offers a Management Studies one- or two-year diploma program, depending on whether students attend classes full or part time.

      Students who want to earn money toward their schooling may opt to work on campus washing and waxing aircraft for $15 per hour. Student loans are available to students who require additional assistance. Speak to the Academy's aid officer to obtain applications and extended information.
