List of Graphic Design Schools

Graphic designers, also called graphic artists, create artistic layouts for magazines and newspapers, design packaging for products and produce signs for businesses and the government. Graphic designers also develop interactive media and web pages. Graphic design schools may offer associate, bachelor or master degrees, however, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most employers require graphic designers to have at least a bachelor's degree in fine arts or graphic design.

    • The Academy of Art University offers a bachelor's degree in fine arts and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Art Schools. Located in San Francisco, California, students may earn their degree in the classroom or online. The program consists of 132 semester units. Students will learn skills such as typography, packaging, web design and motion graphics. The school has on-campus housing available for students with a $500 deposit. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. Financial aid provided by the U.S. Department of Education is available to eligible students.

    Collins College

    • Located in Phoenix, Arizona, Collins College offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design. The school is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. Their 104,000 square foot campus is completely accessible for the handicapped and the program can be completed in 38 months. Students will learn how to plan, develop, produce and present visual communication aides for print publications and web applications. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. Tuition assistance may include federal loans and grants, scholarships, private loans and federal work study.

    Rhode Island School of Design

    • The Rhode Island School of Design, located in Providence, Rhode Island, offers a 4-year Bachelor of Fine Arts and a 5-year Bachelor of Graphic Design degree. The school is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and the Northeastern Association of Schools and Colleges. Student projects include designing books, posters, packaging, exhibits, magazines and film graphics. Seniors have the option of completing an internship for credit in the United States or overseas during the winter session. Prospective applicants are urged to follow a college preparatory program in secondary school, taking courses in studio art and art history where possible. Graduation from secondary school is a prerequisite, although in certain cases a high school equivalency diploma may be accepted. Admission requirements include a high school diploma, official high school and college transcripts, SAT score report, two writing samples, three drawing samples as well as a portfolio that has 12 to 20 examples of two or three dimensional work. Qualified students may receive financial aid such as loans, grants and scholarships.
