Massage Schools in Northern California

Students who train at a massage school in northern California will be able to work as massage therapists and practitioners throughout the state. A 2008 California law states that massage certification is statewide, and does not vary from county to county or city to city. Massage certification can be obtained in as little as 12 weeks.
  1. New Life Institute of Massage Therapy

    • The New Life Institute of Massage Therapy follows guidelines set by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Students enrolled in the school receive 850 hours of massage training. After 500 hours of training, students are eligible to take the national certification test. Students enrolled in the basic course pay tuition of $3,155 plus a $150 registration fee as of 2010. The basic massage therapy course uses lectures, discussions, experiments, computer software and hands-on practice with massage techniques. By the end of the course, the institute claims that students will understand the basic massage strokes and will be able to vary their technique based on what the client needs. The institute also offers other courses, too, such as advanced therapeutic bodywork, advanced therapeutic massage, therapeutic chair massage and reflexology.

    Mount Shasta Institute of Holistic Therapies

    • The Mount Shasta Institute of Holistic Therapies offers students training in the following massage fields: massage practitioner, massage therapist, Qi Gong for health instructor, medical Qi Gong therapist and Chinese herbology. The massage practitioner program requires 250 hours of training, while the massage therapist requires 500 hours. Students learn about anatomy, physiology, Asian medical theory, Swedish massage, chair massage, trigger points, and business and ethics. The practitioner program costs $2,400, and the therapist program costs $5,400 as of 2010. Through the institute's Chinese herbology program, students learn about popular Chinese herbs that are used to treat a variety of ailments. The course is 150 hours and costs $1,500. The institute also has an on-site massage studio.

    Chico Therapy Wellness Center

    • The Chico Therapy Wellness Center offers two levels of certification for California students: the Level I, 250-hour program, and the more advanced Level II program. Several of the classes in Level II require Level I as a prerequisite. The Level I program lasts for 12 weeks and ends with a written and practical final exam. It costs $2,500. Course topics include business ethics, massage etiquette and full-body Swedish massage techniques.
