Schools That Offer an LPN Program Near Lexington, Kentucky

While the University of Kentucky is the premier college in Lexington, the area also offers other higher education options. These options include a trio of two-year colleges that are part of the University of Kentucky Community College System. The colleges each offer three-semester practical nursing programs that prepare students for the national certification test. Students who complete the program and meet the requirements of the Kentucky Board of Nursing are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Exam. Students who pass the exam become licensed practical nurses (LPNs).
  1. Bluegrass Community and Technical College

    • This two-year college based in south Lexington offers students an LPN nursing degree program. The school's practical nursing program features classroom instruction and the required labs and supervised clinical instruction. Students do their hands-on work at local health care facilities. Students must complete at least 52 hours of coursework over three semesters. The final semester includes a five- to six-week clinical practicum. The Bluegrass practical nursing program also is available to students who enroll at the Danville campus.

    Jefferson Community and Technical College

    • Jefferson Community and Technical College is the largest of the state's 16 community colleges. It has an annual enrollment of 15,000 students attending classes at one of the school's six campuses. The Shelbyville campus, located 38 miles northwest of Lexington, offers a practical nursing program. Students who wish to enroll must have an ACT score of at least 19 with a reading score of at least 20. Students must complete 49 credit hours to graduate. The LPN program requires three semesters of attendance. A clinical practicum is part of the third semester.

    Maysville Community and Technical College

    • Maysville opened in 1968 and became part of the University of Kentucky Community College System in 1997. The two-year college had three campuses. The Licking Valley Campus, which opened in 2002, is the nearest to Lexington. It is located 20 miles northeast of downtown Lexington in Cynthiana. The school's practical nursing program is part of the Health Science Technologies division. Students prepare for LPN careers through a combination of classroom instruction on theory and nursing skills. They also care for clients in hospitals, clinics, child care centers and long-term care facilities during their clinical. Students in the program must earn a "C" grade or higher in each nursing class and must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average.
