Approved Nursing Schools in the State of Virginia

The state of Virginia is home to several high quality schools of nursing located at regionally accredited universities. The nursing programs are further accredited by nationally recognized nursing accreditation agencies such as the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing.
  1. Shenandoah University

    • Located in Winchester, Virginia, Shenandoah University is CCNE accredited. Its midwifery program is accredited by the American College of Nurse Midwives Accreditation Commission. The school offers bachelor's and master's degrees in the nursing field (B.S.N. and M.S.N.). Students have several options with the B.S.N. degree. Shenandoah offers a traditional four-year program for undergraduates, a five-semester program for transfer students and a bridge program for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses yet to finish the bachelor's degree. The program is also offered to students with a bachelor's degree in another field (as an accelerated program) who want to pursue a career in nursing. At the master's level, Shenandoah also offers a bridge program for registered nurses who want to accelerate the bachelor's program and progress to the master's program. Various concentrations including health systems management and psychiatric nursing care are offered within the master's program. The university also offers the doctor of nursing practice (D.N.P.) degree.

    Marymount University

    • Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, offers a nursing program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission. Marymount offers both a traditional B.S.N. and an accelerated program for students with a bachelor's degree pursuing nursing as a second field. An online bridge program is open to registered nurses. At the master's degree level, Marymount offers the M.S.N. and the D.N.P. The M.S.N. program has two concentrations: family nurse practitioner and nursing education.

    James Madison University

    • James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg offers a fully approved and accredited nursing program. Accreditation has been granted through the CCNE. JMU offers the degree completion bridge program for registered nurses and a traditional B.S.N. The school also offers an interdisciplinary minor in the field of chronic illness studies. JMU offers an M.S.N. with several areas of concentration available: family nurse practitioner, nurse midwifery, adult nurse practitioner, gerontological nursing, nursing administration and clinical nurse leadership.
