Registered Massage Therapist Schools

Massage therapists commonly practice Swedish, deep-tissue, neuromuscular, Shiatsu or sports massage. It is one of the most flexible professions, as work hours, location and type of practice vary widely. To qualify for this work, individuals must complete an accredited training program. Requirements for registered massage therapists vary by state. Completing a program accredited by organizations such as the United States Department of Education or the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) ensures that the massage therapist will be nationally certified.

The massage therapy curriculum includes 750 hours of training, which exceeds California's requirement of 500 hours. According to the school's website, statistics have shown that 750 hours of training are needed to acquire a more successful, longer and fulfilling career. The curriculum combines coursework in 23 areas, including Eastern and Western massage styles, and hands-on experience through student clinics and a 56-hour externship.

    Northwestern Health Sciences University

    • Located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Northwestern Health Sciences University is part of a university clinic system which maintains five public clinics. These clinics serve more than 72,000 patients a year and provide more than 150 externship opportunities to university students. The institution is comprised of the Northwestern College of Chiropractic, Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and the School of Massage Therapy. The School of Massage Therapy provides a comprehensive curriculum of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathophysiology and nutrition in addition to massage therapy coursework. The training is offered in flexible day or evening programs that are taught by nationally certified massage therapists with a minimum of five years professional experience.

    Bancroft School of Massage Therapy

    • Graduates of Bancroft School of Massage Therapy have maintained a 95 percent pass rate on the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, according to the school's website. It is located in Worcester, Massachusetts, Bancroft is one of the oldest and most active massage therapy institutions. It is also the birthplace of the Bancroft Method, a full-body massage technique registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. The Professional Massage Therapy Diploma Program is offered in 9-, 13- or 17-month sessions taught by professional massage therapists with over 20 years of experience in the field. Bancroft also specializes in animal massage therapy.
