Minneapolis Community and Technical College is a two-year public college offering arts and sciences, continuing education and career training programs. The college provides over 60 career training options, including a Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program. One of the country's oldest two-year institutions, Hibbing Community College is both a technical and community college. Career programs are divided into seven categories, including maintenance repair, which houses the Refrigeration, Heating, Air Conditioning and Major Appliance Repair diploma program.
The program prepares students for entry-level positions installing and servicing equipment. Coursework related to ammonia refrigeration includes refrigeration theory, which discusses topics such as heat transfer and evaporators, and system control technology, which centers on temperature controls. Students must pass the refrigerant certification course, which covers laws regarding the use of refrigerants and environmental hazards.

Minnesota State Community and Technical College has four campuses and offers over 120 programs in liberal arts and career training. The Refrigeration and Air Conditioning diploma program provides HVACR training that prepares students for careers working with engineering, contracting and manufacturing companies.
Coursework includes training in commercial refrigeration, residential refrigeration, refrigeration electrical circuits and refrigeration management. Students engage in advanced labs, field trips, a refrigeration internship and other hands-on projects. The program is offered on the Moorehead campus, the largest of the four schools.
