Surgical Technician Schools in Minnesota

In Minneosta, a number of schools offer programs in surgical technology, a field that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 25 percent from 2008 to 2018. Since their programs carry the accreditation of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, Minnesota's surgical technology schools graduates are eligible to take the certification examination from the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist and begin their careers in the field.

    • Minnesota's state legislature established Northland Community & Technical College in 2003 with the consolidation of what was once three separate vocational schools. The college has grown to have more than 5,400 students. The East Grand Forks branch of Northland offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in surgical technology.

      Students must have CPR and First Aid certification prior to enrolling in the program, which requires two years of full-time study to complete. Students spend the second year of the program working in clinical settings and submitting written reports of daily activities to the school.

    Lake Superior College

    • Located in Duluth, Lake Superior College has an enrollment of more than 4,800 students. In 2006, the college's surgical technology was rated as one of the top 20 in the country by the Accreditation Review Committee on Surgical Technology. The school offers both a diploma with a three-semester course of study and an associate degree program, which requires four-semesters of coursework to complete. Two of the required courses take are offered in hospital settings in Duluth. The school reports that graduating classes from the associate program typically have a 100 percent job placement rate in the field.

    St. Cloud Technical College

    • St. Cloud Technical College is home to more than 4,700 undergraduate students and offers surgical technology among its 90 programs. Students can choose either the 49-credit diploma or the 60-credit associate programs. Coursework involves classroom, laboratory and clinical experience throughout both programs. During the clinical practice, students gain exposure to many types of surgery, including ear nose and throat, obstetrics, plastics and orthopedics. Instructors from the program hold regular information sessions to provide information about the coursework and job opportunities in surgical technology.

    Anoka Technical College

    • Established in 1967, Anoka Technical College has around 1,600 full-time students at its campus in Anoka, approximately 25 miles north of Minneapolis. Surgical technology programs at the school include a 53-credit diploma and a two-year associate degree. Surgical technology classes begin twice per year in August and January.

      The program at Anoka requires coursework in psychology as well as science and vocational-related courses. The school's clinical courses are held in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and students must have their own transportation into the cities.
