Minnesota's state legislature established Northland Community & Technical College in 2003 with the consolidation of what was once three separate vocational schools. The college has grown to have more than 5,400 students. The East Grand Forks branch of Northland offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in surgical technology.
Students must have CPR and First Aid certification prior to enrolling in the program, which requires two years of full-time study to complete. Students spend the second year of the program working in clinical settings and submitting written reports of daily activities to the school.
