The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, is also among the best culinary schools in the nation. The institute employs more certified master chefs to instruct students than any other culinary school in the nation. Over 40,000 chefs have benefited from the more than 1,300 hours of instruction students receive as part of the culinary education program. After the completion of this instruction, students then go on to complete an 18-week externship program at an approved restaurant. The school offers students an opportunity to pursue a bachelor of professional studies (B.P.S.) degree, which requires additional classroom time beyond the traditional hands-on culinary instruction. The B.P.S. prepares students for management in the hospitality industry, as well as introducing them to the history and cultures of nations around the world.
