Culinary Courses in Southern California

Culinary school can prepare you for a career as a head chef, restaurant manager and even as a restaurant owner. Culinary courses that can be taken at various culinary schools usually offer you the opportunity to receive hands-on instruction, along with courses in the theory and history of the culinary traditions. Southern California offers students several opportunities to take culinary courses in order to either pursue a degree or certificate in the field, or simply for self-edification.
  1. College of Culinary Arts

    • The College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena is part of a larger group of schools known as Le Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts. The school operates various culinary schools across the country. Each campus offers different degree and certificate programs, along with different courses designed to meet the needs of students within those programs. The Los Angeles/Pasadena campus offers a culinary arts program, a baking program, a hospitality and management program and non-professional cooking classes as well. Culinary arts courses include studies in cooking methods, food science and pastry preparation, among others. The non-professional cooking courses prepare the novice to simply be a better cook. Courses include Cajun Cooking, Cake Decorating, Grilling and Chilling and Tastes of Italy.

    The Art Institute of California

    • Similar to the Le Cordon Bleu schools, The Art Institute of California in Los Angeles is part of larger group of schools nationwide simply known as "The Art Institute." Each campus has its own courses of study and degree programs, several of which offer courses in the culinary arts. The Los Angeles school offers an associate of science degree in both the culinary arts and in baking and pastry cooking. Baking courses include European Cakes & Tortes, Artisan Breads & Baking Production and Introduction to Baking Science & Theory. Culinary arts courses include studies in areas such as Fundamentals of Classic Techniques, Asian Cuisine, Nutrition Science and Concepts & Theories of Culinary Techniques.

    Institute of Technology

    • Additional culinary courses may be taken in Southern California at the Institute of Technology in Clovis. The school actually has four different campus locations, offering courses in Modesto, Roseville and Redding as well. The school offers three different diploma programs. Two of the diploma programs are in the culinary arts. Students can study to become a culinary professional or a culinary arts specialist. The specialist program encompasses studies from the culinary professional program along with courses from the third program offered by the school, the baking and pastry specialist program. Courses of study include those in various culinary techniques, safety and sanitation methods and various courses in hospitality management as well.
