The Hialeah campus of Everest Institute offers a Surgical Technologist diploma program. Students learn to assist with surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses by performing duties before, during and after surgical procedures. The program trains students in such areas as recognition of basic instruments and aseptic techniques for preventing and infection. Students also learn anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, professional ethics, medical terminology and CPR. Students will obtain experience in an operating room, under supervision, before graduating.
The Tampa campus of Southwest Florida College offers an Associate of Science program for prospective surgical technicians. Students obtain both an academic and clinical background in operating room techniques and practices. Medical assistant labs at Southwest Florida College allow students to practice on one another in an effort to reduce their nervousness when dealing with actual patients. This program has a six-credit, unpaid Surgical Technician externship that must be completed prior to graduation.
Lincoln Technical Institute is part of the Lincoln Group of Schools, an extension of Lincoln Education Services Corporation, a for-profit provider of post-secondary education. The first Lincoln Technical Institute opened in 1946 in Newark, New Jersey, and there are now 43 campuses in 17 states. The Seminole, Florida campus offers a Surgical Technician diploma. Students are provided with hands-on training in the classroom, local hospitals and facilities. Tutoring is available for all students.
Sanford-Brown Institute is a private college that has been in operation since 1866. Its Jacksonville campus offers students a diploma in Surgical Technology. Students learn about anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, surgical pharmacology and microbiology. They are also taught to think critically under pressure, to anticipate patient needs and safety, and to prepare cases. There are on-campus, lecture and lab components in addition to an off-campus clinical component. The final externship portion of the program involves supervised experience in a clinical environment. The school offers flexible class schedules, including daytime, evening and weekend courses.
