CVT Technician Programs in Florida

The state of Florida is home to a number of CVT technician programs meant to prepare students for careers in cardiovascular technology, a field the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 24 percent from 2008 through 2018. Carrying the accreditation of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP), these private and public institutions combine classroom-based training with hands-on experience in hospitals and diagnostic medical clinics throughout the state.
  1. Valencia Community College

    • A public two-year institution, Valencia Community College is in Orlando. The college launched its Associate of Applied Science in cardiovascular technology degree program in 2002. The program requires two years to complete, and students must complete prerequisite courses in psychology, algebra, anatomy, microbiology, physics, medical terminology before applying for admission. Valencia admits only 16 students to the program each year. In addition to completing their classroom and laboratory work, CVT technology students spend 16 to 24 hours per week in clinical settings.

    Edison State College

    • The Fort Myers branch of public Edison State College offers an Associate in Science degree in cardiovascular technology. The program has no prerequisite courses, but accepts only 20 students each year. Students must submit to a criminal background check before being offered admission to the program. Edison allows full and part-time study in the CVT program, and full-time students can complete the degree requirements within 22 months. Students begin clinical rotations during the spring semester of their first year. Sites for rotations include hospitals and clinics in Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda.

    Central Florida Institute

    • Established in 1997, Central Florida Institute is a private technical college. The school offers its associate degree in cardiovascular technology programs at both its Palm Harbor branch near Tampa and its Orlando locations. In addition to receiving training in heart catheterization and echocardiography, the program also provides courses in medical assisting. Graduates from the program have the necessary credential to work in either field. Classes begin several times per year. A one-year diploma program in specific testing fields like heart sonography are also available.

    Santa Fe College

    • Situated in Gainesville, Santa Fe College is a public, community college. The school began offering cardiovascular technology associate degree program in 1970. The program covers invasive cardiology and pulmonary functions testing as well as cardiac and vascular ultrasound and then allows students to pick one of the two fields of study in which to specialize. Students spend the first three semesters of the program entirely in the classroom, and the remaining two semesters consist of clinical rotations at hospitals and clinics throughout Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. Space in the programs is limited, and all students must undergo a background check prior to acceptance. The college offers a limited number of scholarships exclusively for health sciences students like those in CVT technology.
