The program trains students to use medical imaging equipment to produce radiographs for detecting and diagnosing injury and disease. The university says rad techs can work in hospitals, oncology centers and doctors' offices.

Parkland College in Champaign offers an Associate of Applied Science in radiologic technology, and certificates in computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The program trains students to take medical imaging at an energized X-ray laboratory as well as other clinical settings. The school says its graduates can find jobs in trauma centers, hospitals and clinics. They can also advance to ultrasound, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine.

Malcolm X College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, offers an Associate of Applied Science in radiography. Students learn to make radiographs of the stomach, intestines, kidney, bones and more. The college says its graduates can go on to specialize in MRI, CT, mammography, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy, or attend another university to earn a bachelor's degree.

Wilbur Wright College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, has an Associate of Applied Science program in radiography. The college says its students learn the skills necessary to use radiation to help diagnose disease. Also, the college provides an "Education Guarantee," meaning if graduates are judged by their employer to lack the required skills to do their jobs, the graduates will receive 12 free credit hours of training.

Beyond X-ray training, health care professionals learn anatomy, patient positioning and radiation safety and may specialize in such fields as bone densitometry, CT, mammography, sonography and more, the college says. Graduates can find work in hospitals, clinics and other medical imaging facilities. Clinical experience occurs at medical centers and hospitals.
