Marquette School of Therapeutic Massage offers training in massage techniques, business and ethics and legislation/regulations regarding massage therapy. Some techniques covered include Swedish massage, basic shiatsu massage, myofascial massage, sports massage, seated massage, kinseology, muscle energy techniques and pressure point therapy. Marquette School of Therapeutic Massage uses a "hybrid distance learning" program that allows some work to be done on-line and on a more relaxed schedule. The 500-hour program lasts 16 weeks, and prepares students to become entry level massage therapists through lecture, discussion and hands-on work. About eight to 12 students enroll per class.

Blue Heron Academy of Healing Arts and Sciences has several campuses throughout Michigan, and the Traverse City school is the northernmost location. The massage therapy training at Blue Heron is a six-month medical massage program. Classes are offered on both days and evenings with an emphasis on hands-on training. Blue Heron provides financial assistance and career placement upon graduation. Training includes lessons in body physiology and body mechanics, the nature and physiology of pain and stress management, communications and counseling. It also provides training in such therapeutic modalities as heat and cold, water, oils, vibrations and lasers. Completion of the Blue Heron training earns a student the title of certified massage therapist.

The Institute of Natural Therapies was founded to serve the Hancock community in Michigan's northern Upper Peninsula. Students at the institute learn different massage techniques and also develop their own personal massage based on those techniques. Types of massage include Swedish massage, deep muscular therapy, neuro-muscular therapy (trigger points), traditional Chinese medicine and myofascial therapy. In addition, students learn CPR, First Aid, business ethics and clinical responsibilities. Classes are limited to 22 students and are held twice a month on weekends. Students spend 500 hours in class, 306 hours of supervised distance learning and 100 hours of hands-on massage work. An optional three-week study program in Thailand is also available through the Institute of Natural Therapies.
