Irish Art Schools

Studying art at the university level can help you unleash your creativity and develop your practical artistic skills. Art schools in Ireland, both north and south, offer numerous opportunities for students. Whether you are interested in fashion, jewelry, painting or photography, you are likely to find the right course for you in Ireland.
  1. National College of Art and Design

    • The National College of Art and Design, or NCAD, offers the widest range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Irish Republic. The Dublin-based institution traces its origins to 1746, and since 1996 has been a recognized college of the National University of Ireland. NCAD organizes its courses through four faculties: Education, Design, Fine Art and Visual Culture. Students can choose course options to suit their own abilities and interests, working with a variety of different media and thinking about the history of art and the theory of artistic practice. Lecturers assess students' work through a mixture of project work--including written papers--and end-of-year exams. Students are also expected to take part in exhibitions and shows at the end of the years.

    • Based on the west coast of Ireland, the Limerick Institute of Technology's School of Art and Design, or LSAD, is the largest such school outside Dublin. All students share a common first year that allows them to identify their areas of skill and interest before specializing in a specific area such as fashion or printmaking. LSAD offers undergraduate degree programs in product design, fashion design, visual communication, painting, printmaking and combined media. Students can further develop their skills in postgraduate research or through training to teach art.
