The National College of Art and Design, or NCAD, offers the widest range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Irish Republic. The Dublin-based institution traces its origins to 1746, and since 1996 has been a recognized college of the National University of Ireland. NCAD organizes its courses through four faculties: Education, Design, Fine Art and Visual Culture. Students can choose course options to suit their own abilities and interests, working with a variety of different media and thinking about the history of art and the theory of artistic practice. Lecturers assess students' work through a mixture of project work--including written papers--and end-of-year exams. Students are also expected to take part in exhibitions and shows at the end of the years.
