Scholarships for Undergraduate Students in Texas

Most scholarships for residents of the state of Texas are limited to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year Texas university. However, some scholarship programs welcome current undergraduate student applicants. A few scholarships require membership in specific community organizations, while others are open to every academically eligible Texas undergraduate student.

    Educational Aide Exemption

    • Educational Aide Exemption helps Texas public school substitute teachers or educational aides who are also current undergraduate students. The program requires that students be working toward teacher certification. Substitute teachers must have worked 180 days in that role during a five-year period; educational aides must have at least one year of experience in a Texas public school system.

The program covers tuition for those educational aides or substitute teachers who demonstrate financial need and study at an accredited Texas college or university. They must work in some capacity with a Texas public school system during the duration of their award semester.

Applications are accepted four times a year, and a total of 4,000 awards are given annually. Eligible people are invited to call the Texas Education Coordinating Board at (512) 427-6387, according to the CollegeBoard 2010 Scholarship Handbook.

    ADELANTE! Fund Scholarships

    • The ADELANTE! Fund offers several awards for undergraduate students who are also of Hispanic heritage. The number of scholarships awarded varies each year, but typical grants range from $1,000 to $3,000, as of 2010.

The MillerCoors Texas scholarships are available for incoming or current undergraduate college students who are also residents of Dallas, Houston or El Paso. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required as well as two recommendation letters attesting to the applicant's leadership potential. The student must plan full-time college attendance. Awards may be renewed.

The Hope Scholarship is open only to students who plan to attend an undergraduate college or university in San Antonio. The program is available to any major; a 2.5 GPA as well as full-time attendance are required. Employees of CPS Energy are not eligible for Hope scholarships.
