Speech Pathology Graduate School Programs

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) diagnose and treat a range of problems related to speech and language. As an SLP, you might work with children who have learning disabilities, hospital patients recovering from brain injury or stroke, or older adults who are experiencing memory loss. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most SLP jobs require a master's degree, and many require that you hold a degree from a graduate school accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation, which is part of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). There are about 240 accredited SLP graduate programs as of 2010. If you want to study speech-language pathology but don't plan to become a licensed SLP, many programs also offer a nonclinical master's degree, which is typically a precursor to earning a Ph.D.
