Founded as a military academy in 1876, the public university's Corps of Cadets is the largest group of student military members outside of the nation's military academies. Auburn University in Alabama provides a full-time veteran counselor on its staff to help ex-military members navigate the college process. It also offers a military mental health screening service for deployed service members to help them deal with the common psychological issues associated with being sent to into combat. Auburn's academic offerings include distance learning graduate programs that are convenient for enlisted personnel. Its online Master of Business Administration program enrolled 30 members of the military in 2009. Discounts are available for service members and their dependents. Enlisted students can also apply for military scholarships. They can return to school without penalty after being activated. Auburn participates in the federal Yellow Ribbon Program, a cost-sharing agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs to help veterans offset the tuition costs that are not covered by their military benefits.
