Military Graduate Colleges

The Title 10 U.S. Code, section 2111(a) recognizes six post-secondary institutions as senior military colleges. Of the six, five have graduate school programs: North Georgia College and State University; Norwich University; Texas A&M University; the Citadel; and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The Virginia Military Institute does not have a graduate program but does prepare students to move on to higher levels of education. Each senior military college continues to provide a military learning environment throughout each graduate program.
  1. Programs

    • Each of the five senior military college graduate schools offer programs in several disciplines, including education, medicine, military history, psychology and business administration. Each school also provides a variety of different graduate degree programs. For example, Texas A&M offers degree programs focusing on agribusiness and veterinary medicine. Norwich University provides master's degrees in diplomacy, information assurance and justice administration. North Georgia has a master's degree in music program and Virginia Tech has a graduate certificate in religious studies. The Citadel certifies graduates in technical project management and sport sales and marketing.

    Learning Environment

    • The five senior military colleges with graduate programs are so designated because they teach students military structure, traditional customs and courtesies and adhere to rigid military discipline. Students are expected to conduct physical training each weekday morning, maintain good order and present themselves with a military appearance at all times. Military accountability formations, during which students are accounted for by their leaders, are routinely conducted.

    Scholarships and Service Obligations

    • Students attending a military graduate college on a scholarship from the U.S. military will incur a service obligation to their branch. Service obligations are generally eight year contractual obligations to serve. A portion of that time, generally four years, can be served in the Individual or Inactive Ready Reserve. The IRR does not require service members to report for duty, and they may work civilian jobs during IRR service. The IRR reserves the right to recall former service members to active duty in their branch.

    Locations and Student Accomodations

    • North Georgia College and State University is located in Dahlonega, Georgia. Norwich University is located in Northfield, Vermont, and Texas A&M University is in College Station, Texas. The Citadel is in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina, while Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is in Blacksburg, Virginia. Each campus offers graduate student lodging for an additional fee. Additionally, several homes and apartments in the areas surrounding campus are available for rent.
