Military education is a diverse subject, and there are a number of different study options available to those who wish to combine military service with academic progress. A college education with a military focus helps focus young minds and provide them with the discipline and self-respect they need to advance in life. Conversely, studying while in the armed forces prepares military personnel for life outside the service and gives them confidence to pursue future careers.
Oak Ridge Military Academy is the only military boarding school in North Carolina, and is located just outside of Greensboro. It offers a wide range of academic course programs and all teaching is conducted in conjunction with key military principles like discipline, self-control and respect for authority. Only male students are enrolled in the Corps of Cadets, which offers opportunities for leadership. The academy is open to young men in grades eight through 12 and works alongside the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps.
The North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, operates a Department of Military Science to train young people for positions as officers in the armed forces. The academic course runs alongside the university's Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps, which offers practical training to those interested in the joining the army. Students who successfully complete the ROTC course are awarded a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation.
The University of North Carolina offers military personnel the opportunity to study at the college while serving in the armed forces. Working in conjunction with a network of 16 other higher education institutions, the school offers both vocational and academic courses that are completed through the Internet. The university's military education program also offers college credits to high school students. Military facilities where learning is directly available include Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base.
