The University of Indianapolis offers a physical therapist assistant program that is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to enter into the field of physical therapy. Students can opt to complete all or some of the core classes for general education either before entry into the program or after they have entered into the program; whichever way they choose, all classes must be completed before graduation. Students will take classes such as human anatomy and physiology, wellness and fitness and introduction to physics as well as functional anatomy, patient care and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.

Bossier Parish Community College's Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program is designed to be completed in two years on a full-time schedule. The program consists of two components:, the pre-PTA component and the clinical component. Students have the option of completing the pre-PTA component on a part-time schedule if they choose. For the clinical component, students will enter into this portion in the July after they have passed the first component. Students will take functional anatomy, clinical kinesiology and introduction to physical therapy as well as orthopedic conditions, clinical neuroanatomy and therapeutic exercise. Upon completion of this degree, students will be prepared to take the licensure examination.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers an Associate of Applied Science degree as a physical therapy assistant. This program is designed to provide students with the training and education that is needed to provide services to patients under the direct supervision of a physical therapist. In addition to the classroom instruction, students will receive clinical training in regional clinics and hospitals throughout southern Illinois and parts of Missouri, Indiana, Tennessee and Kentucky. Students will take physiology, anatomy and medical terminology as well as therapeutic exercise, physical rehabilitation techniques and developmental psychology. Upon completion of this program, students will be prepared to take the exam for licensure as a physical therapy assistant.
