Graduate Nursing Programs for Nurse Practitioners in North Carolina

North Carolina has eight graduate nursing schools that offer programs for nurse practitioner licensure. Nurse practitioners, a type of advanced practice nurse, perform physical exams, order and review diagnostic tests, prescribe medication and provide other services similar to those of a primary care physician.
  1. Duke University

    • The Duke University School of Nursing admits students to its nurse practitioner programs three times a year, in the spring, summer and fall. Applicants can choose from nine specialties, including adult acute care, adult cardiovascular care, adult primary care, family care, gerontology, oncology, pediatric acute care, pediatric primary care, and neonatal care. Some specialties allow students to complete the curriculum on a full-time or part-time basis and online or on campus. Admission requirements include a bachelor's degree, current registered nurse licensure with at least one year of experience, and a minimum combined verbal and quantitative score of 1000 and analytical 3.5 on the Graduate Record Exam.

    East Carolina University

    • The College of Nursing at East Carolina University confers a master's degree in nursing for nurse practitioner licensure in adult care, family care, or neonatal care. All three programs are conducted online only, but can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Applicants must have a bachelor of science degree in nursing with a minimum 2.7 GPA, satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test, a current registered nurse license, a personal statement, three professional references, and prerequisite courses in statistics, a research course, and computer literacy. Certain specialties require a minimum amount of registered nurse experience in a specific department.

    University of North Carolina at Greensboro

    • Applicants for the adult/gerontology nurse practitioner program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro must have a bachelor of science degree in nursing with a minimum 3.0 GPA, prerequisite courses in statistics and health assessment, and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test. If attended full-time, students will receive a master of science degree in nursing after five semesters of study; the part-time curriculum takes seven semesters to complete.
