Professional Psychology Associations

The field of psychology has grown to become an expansive field of study in American colleges and universities over the last century. The development of behaviorism by J. B. Watson and B. F. Skinner, along with the incalculable contributions of Sigmund Freud gave birth to a discipline that has flowered and grown ever since. Today, numerous professional psychological organizations exist. to provide scholars and students with a chance to collaborate with one another in a professional environment.
  1. American Psychological Association

    • The American Psychological Association (APA) is the flagship organization for the professional study of psychology. The organization boasts a membership of professionals in the field of psychology that exceeds 150,000. Its primary purpose is to advance the discipline of psychology through professional clinical practice and through scientific research. Members of the APA meet regularly for scheduled professional conferences in which they network, share ideas and current research in order to stimulate further study within the field. The APA also sets standards for doctoral level study in the field and maintains its own accrediting body to promote excellence and uniform standards throughout the discipline.

    Association for Psychological Science

    • The Association for Psychological Science is a professional organization devoted to the promotion of scientific research and collaboration in psychology. The organization was founded in 1988 after a failed attempt to reorganize the APA. The APS was created with the intention of serving the scientific psychological community by promoting its own conferences, publications and research, but it was also created to promote efficiency in social activities. Today the organization is one of the largest in professional psychology with 22,500 members. It is governed by a board of directors and offers memberships to students and faculty members at all levels on a yearly or lifetime basis.

    Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences

    • The Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences (FABBS) works to promote research in the areas of "mind, brain, and behavior sciences" through a coalition of members who actively work in the field. The mission statement of the federation indicates that it regularly communicates with both the public and with policy makers regarding the implications of its findings. The organization was founded in 1980 and is actually supported by eight other psychological societies, including the APA. The FABBS works with other organizations like the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Health. Membership is open to scientific organizations, university departments and corporate entities.
