• Darton College is another academic institution that is approved as one of the educational providers for those who seek a substance-abuse certificate from one of the certification boards in Georgia. The program in human services technology leads to an associate's degree and is designed to prepare students for entry level positions as care providers in human services, which include addiction and substance abuse. One of the two options for this major is addiction/substance abuse counselor; the other option is community health/mental health worker. Required courses include personal growth and development, families and other systems, counseling theories and methods, crisis intervention and understanding and treating addictions.

Institute for Clinical and Professional Development of Georgia

• The Institute for Clinical and Professional Development of Georgia is another institute that offers a program that is approved when seeking a substance-abuse certificate. This program consists of 180 contact hours and is designed to be completed over the course of 12 months with students attending the classroom on one weekend per month. Students may begin the program in any month throughout the course of the year. Courses take place on the second Friday and Saturday of every month between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. All instructors of the required courses have at least 15 years of experience in both mental health and substance abuse and have certifications and advanced clinical degrees. Topics that are covered in this program include the causes and origins of addiction, counseling skills, effective intervention strategies and treatment planning and case management.
