Substance Abuse Counselor Training Schools in Georgia

Substance abuse counselors assist people with drug and alcohol addictions and their families or friends in individual and group sessions. The Georgia Addiction Counselors' Association, a state affiliate of the National Association for Addiction Professionals, offers level one and two substance abuse counselor certifications. The association requires 36 to 54 hours of training from an approved school. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, substance abuse counselors made up 86,100 of the nation's 665,500 counselors and earned a median annual wage of $37,030 in 2008.

    • Circle of Recovery offers a 70 hour basic substance abuse counselor course. Topics covered include pharmacology of drugs, listening and responding skills, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of substance abusers, ethics, HIV and AIDS. Other training topics include co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, anger management and life coaching. The training center, founded in 1987, offers substance abuse training programs for groups and individuals both in the governmental and public sectors.     Darton College

    • The Business and Social Science Division of Darton College offers a certificate program that satisfies the level two education requirements for Georgia Addiction Counselors' Association addiction counselor certification. The 18 credit course takes three semesters for completion and includes classes in counseling theories and methods, understanding and treating addictions, families and systems, addiction and mental health trends, group therapy and applied community health. To enroll, students need to take English composition one and two, developmental studies, learning support and core education classes for a total of 90 quarter or 60 semester hours of study. To sit for the association exam, candidates must have a bachelor's degree.

    Joyfields Institute

    • The Joyfields Institute has trained more than 140 organizations, service providers, corporations and agencies in the governmental and non-governmental sectors. Courses are offered in webinars, e-learning modules, in workshops at the institute and presented to private groups at their designated location. The institute covers substance abuse counseling concepts from the core to the advanced level practitioner with custom group therapy strategies geared towards adolescents and adults. Topics include youth interview concepts, cognitive behavioral approaches to substance abuse, preventing relapse and recidivism, case and staff management, transitional housing and mentoring.
