Schools for Substance Abuse Counseling

Requirements to become a substance abuse counselor can vary by state. The Princeton Review notes that it is not necessary to have a degree in order to become a substance abuse counselor, but it can expedite the process of receiving state certification and can lead to consideration for supervisory positions and to a greater rate of pay. Schools with substance abuse counseling programs offer certificates as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees in the field.
