Eastfield College has a degree program in substance abuse counseling that leads students to earn an associate of applied science degree upon graduation. This program prepares individuals for entry into the human services field with specialized training to provide services to individuals and their families who are dealing with substance abuse. Courses include orientation to social sciences, pharmacology of addiction, assessment and case management, multicultural counseling, counseling alcohol and other drug addictions, special problems of youth, human behavior and the social environment and introduction to social and political philosophy.

Ohio Christian University has a bachelor of arts degree program in substance abuse counseling that prepare students for work in the field of addiction recovery services. Textbooks for the required curriculum of this program are mailed to the students’ homes requiring students to attend campus one day out of each week. This Christian-based program is designed to teach students how to integrate the Christian principles into their career. Courses include psychopharmacology of drugs, family dynamics in substance abuse, prevention strategies, theories and techniques of individual counseling, Christian excellence and introduction to theology.

Adler School of Professional Psychology offers an option for students to have substance abuse counseling as a concentration area within their master’s degree level or doctoral level. The purpose of this program is to provide students with an education on substance abuse and training to intervene, treat and prevent alcohol and other drug abuse. Course requirements consist of four courses: introduction to addictive disorders, treatment of addictive disorders, bio-psycho-social-spiritual aspects of addictions and professional development, issues and ethics. In addition to completing the required courses, students are also required to complete field placements that demand a minimum of 500 contact hours. These hours are completed over the course of two semesters at 10 to 20 hours per week.
