List of Major Universities for Pharmacists

Pharmacists play an integral role in the health care system and pharmaceutical industry. Those endeavoring to become pharmacists will find a variety of universities throughout the country that offer programs that lead to Ph.D.s and a combination degree program of M.D./Ph.D.



Pharmacist not only work in pharmacies, but also in major industries focused on developing new medications. In addition, pharmacists function as college professors, health care governmental advisers and lobbyists.
  1. District of Columbia Universities

    • The district has several universities that offer degree program for pharmacists, such as Georgetown, George Washington and Howard University.

      Howard University offers a four-year Doctor of Pharmacy degree for students who have a 2.5 grade point average in all pre-pharmacy courses. Candidates must have two letters of recommendation and write a 250-word paper explaining how a degree in pharmacy will assist in meeting career goals. As of 2010, the approximate tuition cost per semester is $13,535.

    Pennsylvania Universities

    • The universities in the state of Pennsylvania that offer degree programs for pharmacists include Pennsylvania State, Thomas Jefferson, Mcp Hahnemann, Pittsburgh and Temple University.

      Temple University offers a Ph.D. in Pharmacology or M.D./Ph.D. combination degree program. Students receive training in the areas of pharmacology, physiology, biochemical pharmacology, experimental pharmacology and medical pharmacology. This four-year program requires students to participate in two rotations in departmental labs. Students must pass a general preliminary examination after the second year of study, and a thesis is required during the final year.

    North Carolina Universities

    • The state of North Carolina has the following universities that offer a degree program for pharmacy: Wake Forest, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke and East Carolina University.

      East Carolina University offers a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree program in pharmacy. The prerequisites for the Ph.D. program include candidates possessing a strong background in biology, chemistry and laboratory sciences. Students must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university, personal statement explaining career goals and completion of the Graduate Record Exam.
