List of Universities in the UK for Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is the use of computer technology to manage the study of molecular biology. This includes DNA mapping and analyzing protein sequences. The term "bioinformatics" was coined in 1979 to describe "the study of informatic processes in biotic systems," according to the Bioinformatics Association, one of the largest groups in this field. To work in bioinformatics, a highly specialized field, students can receive a master's degree from several U.K. universities.
  1. The University of Manchester

    • The University of Manchester pairs bioinformatics with computational biology in a master's program that studies biological systems using computers and statistical analysis. The one-year course requires obtaining 90 credits on a full-time schedule of classes. Courses include Introduction to Bioinformatics, Evolutionary Genetics Tutorials, Metabolic Modelling and Genomes to Systems. Students also undertake a short- or long-term research project.

    University of Exeter

    • Students at the University of Exeter's Centre for Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics can receive either a Master's of Science (MSc) or Master's of Research (MRes) degree. Courses include Machine Learning and Neural Networks, Database Searching, Proteomic and Genomic Data Analysis and Bioethics. The core program takes six months, after which students can choose to present a dissertation or complete a six-month research project.

    University of Glasgow

    • The University of Glasgow gives students a Master's of Research in Bioinformatics upon completion of a 12-month program. The first part of the program is taught, with classroom courses about DNA, protein and systems biology. The final 15 weeks are spent working on a real-world research project with major universities and corporations. About half of the students who complete this course go on to receive a Ph.D., according to the school's website.
