Pensacola’s colleges are as varied the locale itself; from beaches to Blue Angels, this western Florida Panhandle town provides an array of activities. Colleges range in scope from private, technical and career-training schools to mid-sized, public universities. The University of West Florida’s mascots are Greek mythology’s sea-faring Argonauts; Pensacola Christian College’s athletic teams are represented by an eagle and Pensacola State’s, by a pirate.     • Pensacola Christian College is a liberal arts school that offers associate's, bachelor’s and graduate degrees in nine areas of study: Bible, business, education, physical education, communicative arts, music, arts and sciences, basic sciences and engineering and nursing. According to PCC, “Our mission is to promote the cause of Christ by providing a distinctively Christian-traditional, liberal arts education that develops students spiritually, intellectually, morally, culturally, and socially. The college has its own unique personality, character, and philosophy of education in line with its mission.”

      The college is not accreditated; according to its application packet, “PCC has never made application for regional accreditation because it could jeopardize the College’s philosophical distinctives.”

    Pensacola State College

    • Formerly Pensacola Junior College, Pensacola State College awards associate's degrees and bachelor's degrees, as well as technical, vocational and health care program certificates in 20 areas of study: allied health, automotive technology, behavioral sciences, biological sciences, business, computer science, culinary and hospitality management, developmental studies, education, engineering technology, English/communications, health sciences, history/languages/philosophy, information technology, mathematics, music and theater, nursing, physical sciences, professional service careers and visual arts. The school also provides adult basic education, an educator prep institute, continuing education and dual enrollment for high school juniors and seniors. Accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the college states its mission is to "provide quality educational opportunities and support services to meet the requirements of all students pursuing intellectual fulfillment, career training, and lifetime education. "

    University of West Florida

    • The University of West Florida grants associate, bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and Doctor of Education degrees. Areas of study are athletic training, chemistry, clinical laboratory science, business, computer engineering, electrical engineering, music, nursing, psychology, public health, social work and teacher education. The school is accredited by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; additionally, each college within the university is accredited by national agencies responsible for specific academic discipline accreditations. According to UWF, its mission is, “To empower each individual we serve with knowledge and opportunity to contribute responsibly and creatively to a complex world.”

    Virginia College

    • Virginia College has 16 campuses in eight states, including Florida. The Pensacola campus gives diplomas and associate's degrees in these areas of study: administrative office management, health sciences/practical nursing concentration, health care reimbursement, medical assistant, medical assistant, medical billing and coding, medical office administration, paralegal studies, pharmacy technician, pharmacy technology, practical nursing and surgical technology. The school is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. The college states its mission is to offer associate and baccalaureate degrees as well as diploma courses to "strengthen the student's ability to enter or advance in a chosen career."
