Court Stenography Schools

Court reporters work within the judicial system and as independent reporters who take depositions at attorney's offices and during mediation. Some states require court reporters to have strict references and to undergo approved background checks. In some jurisdictions, a recommendation from a judge or local attorney is helpful. Some court stenography schools offer associate's degrees in science or applied science.
  1. Erwin Technical School

    • The court reporting program at Erwin Technical School in Tampa, Florida, requires class attendance 3 days a week and 2 days of online courses. The program takes approximately 32 months to complete. Students are required purchase a real-time machine and court reporting software as well as books and supplies listed on the school website.

    Sage College

    • This college has campuses in San Diego and Moreno Valley, California. Applicants must be 18 or older, have a high school diploma or equivalent and pass a performance evaluation. Students are trained on the stenotype machine to type in excess of 200 words per minute, which is the minimum speed required to attain the status of CCR, or certified court reporter, in most states. Additional courses, such as legal and medical terminology, are required to complete the program. Financial aid is available for students who qualify.

    Gadsden State Community College

    • Located in Gadsden, Alabama, this school offers a short-term certificate in real-time reporting for students who complete the 26 hours of classwork. All courses must be approved in advance by a student adviser. Student must have a high school degree or the equivalent and have attained a minimum score on the English portion of the placement test to enroll.

    Denver Academy of Court Reporting

    • This Colorado school offers an Associate of Applied Science in Court and Real-time Reporting degree. Day, night and online courses allow students to have a flexible schedule while also holding down a full- or part-time job. The school's internship program helps students meet and work with prospective future employers.

    Prince Institute

    • Prince Institute boasts that it placed 100 percent of its graduates in jobs in 2010. The school, which offers online and on-site courses in Montgomery, Alabama, is accredited and helps applicants obtain financial aid, scholarships and veteran's benefits. The program typically takes 2 1/2 to 4 years to complete. Proficiency in machine shorthand is required, with students reaching a typing speed of approximately 225 words per minute by graduation. The NCRA, or National Court Reporters' Association, requires applicants to type at least 225 words per minute with 95 percent accuracy to attain national certification.
