Modern Gun School is located in Vermont, but it only offers distance learning courses. Each course takes six months to complete. The Basic Gun Repair course is for gun enthusiasts and includes 31 lessons with exams. Students learn the tools required to make intricate repairs. The Advanced Gun Repair course is for professionals and offers an additional 34 lessons. The material covers shotguns, scopes and chokes, accurizing (making the weapon more precise), sporterizing (modifying military firearms for sporting use), antique restoration, wholesale buying, bluing, ballistics secrets and tools.
Penn Foster Career School offers a distance learning gunsmithing diploma. Coursework includes accurizing, repairing, customizing, fitting and finishing stocks, mounting telescopic sights, restoring antique firearms, design and installation of metallic rifle sights and how to custom-load ammunition. Students work at their own page, and there is no set time to complete the course.
Ashworth College offers an online gunsmithing diploma program that can take less than six months to complete. Students learn how to clean, maintain and service handguns, rifles and shotguns, as well as how to install and replace components and keep guns in top condition. The course also teaches students how to start their own business, including marketing and charging for gunsmith services.
The American Gunsmithing Institute uses a video/DVD system for its online gunsmithing training course. The videos teach students to troubleshoot and repair all types of firearms, repair triggers, customize Glock pistols, various bluing methods, stock refinishing, step-by-step gun-building, advanced welding techniques, how to make coil springs and detailed machine shop training. Students work at their own pace and can complete the course in two to three months if they watch at least one video a day.
