The Delaware Technical and Community College Stanton/Wilmington campus is located in Newark and Wilmington. At Delaware Tech you can earn a welding maintenance technician certificate, a certificate program that has been approved by the Delaware Workforce Investment Board & Department of Labor. It is also an Equal Opportunity Employment program. To complete the program, you will need to take a minimum of 11 courses: a math course, a computer course, a construction safety course, a blueprint-reading course and seven welding courses.
The Delaware Skills Center is located in Wilmington, and has focused on adult vocational technical training since 1962. The welding course covers metal arc welding (shielded and gas), flux cored arc welding, oxyacetylene fuel cutting with assorted torches and air carbon arc gouging. Welding equipment safety is also part of instruction. After completion of the 18-week course--which runs Monday through Friday for seven hours each day--the graduate will either be a second- or third-class welder, depending on the success of the individual. The intention of this course is to enable the student to be an entry-level welder or to find work as a welding apprentice.
The Keen Welding School is located in New Castle. It has training programs for beginning to experienced welders. Class size is limited to five people to ensure each student receives adequate training. Classes run for two days, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch and all materials are included in the price. The classes offered are basic welding, intermediate welding, advanced welding, Pro MIG welding, Pro TIG welding, pipe welding and custom training.
The Polytech High School in Woodside offers two welding classes through its Polytech Adult Education program. The first course, basic welding, runs for three months and teaches the fundamentals of electric arc welding and oxyacetylene cutting and welding. Hands-on practice will be required for the students. The second course, MIG/TIG welding, runs for 24 classes. It is a specialized course for new and experienced welders. This course teaches students about production welding, metal inert gas welding and tungsten inert gas welding. Hands-on practice is also required in this course.
