Connecticut Dental Schools

Connecticut has only one university that offers a Doctorate in Dental Surgery or a Doctorate in Dental Medicine, which are the degrees necessary to become a dentist. There are many schools in Connecticut that offer other types of dentistry degrees. Dental schools in Connecticut prepare students for licensing administered by the Connecticut School of Public Health.
  1. Graduate Degrees in Dentistry

    • The only college in Connecticut that grants a graduate degree in dentistry is the University of Connecticut's School of Dental Medicine. Departments in this school include Oral Health and Diagnostic Sciences, Reconstructive Sciences and Craniofacial Sciences. This school offers master's degrees and doctorates in dental medicine.

UConn's School of Dental Medicine also offers advanced postgraduate courses, many of which result in certificates of specialties such as periodontology, endodontology, orthodontics and prosthodontics.

    Bachelor's Degrees in Dentistry

    • The University of Connecticut's School of Dental Medicine offers undergraduate degrees in dentistry in addition to its comprehensive graduate program.

The University of Bridgeport offers a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. Students may also minor in a variety of subjects including marketing and psychology, which will assist future dental hygienists in patient care and management of the dental practice.

The University of New Haven also grants bachelor's degrees in dental hygiene. A strong record in biology and at least two years of college preparatory math are required for acceptance to the school.

    Associate's Degrees in Dentistry

    • An associate's degree in dental hygiene is the minimum educational requirement for taking the state licensing exam to become a dental hygienist. Associate's degree holders generally make less money than bachelor's degree holders. Some dentists prefer that their hygienists hold bachelor's degrees.

The University of New Haven offers an associate's degree in dental hygiene. Students pursuing a bachelor's degree may exit the program after the third year and still obtain this degree.

The University of Bridgeport offers associate's degrees in dental hygiene to students who complete the coursework with a minimum of a "C" average.

Tunxis Community College, located in Farmington, has an associate's degree program in dental hygiene designed with the state board exams in mind. This program is affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Dental medicine, and some classes are conducted there.

Lincoln College, located in Southington, grants associate's degrees for dental hygienists and dental administrative assistants.

    Certificate Programs in Dentistry

    • The Porter and Chester Institute conducts a nine-month training program for dental assistants. Successful graduates are able to take dental impressions, assist dentists with patient needs and take radiographs, among other skills. Day and evening classes are available.

Lincoln College offers a one-year certificate program in dental chair-side assistance. Laboratory techniques are also taught.
