Nursing Colleges in Minnesota

Students wanting to pursue a career in nursing have several options for schooling in the Twin Cities and elsewhere in Minnesota. Nursing students can obtain bachelor's or master's degrees or a post-master's degree or certification.
  1. University of Minnesota

    • The University of Minnesota, located in Minneapolis, is the oldest college in the state and has an enrollment of about 50,000. The UM School of Nursing, begun in 1909, was the first continuing nursing program on a university campus in the United States. The program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and a Master's of Nursing leading to an RN examination and a Doctor of Nursing Practice program along with various advanced nursing certifications. The school also offers a PhD program for nurses interested in research and for those who want to teach nursing at the college level.

    Winona State

    • Winona State University is located beside the Mississippi River near the Wisconsin state line in southeastern Minnesota. The Department of Nursing at Winona State has been operating for about 40 years. The undergraduate programs include a Bachelor of Nursing generic option and an RN baccalaureate option. At the nearby Rochester campus, a graduate program focuses on several areas, including family nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nursing administration and nurse educator. The program also offers post-master's certification and the Doctor of Nursing Practice.

    St. Cloud State

    • St. Cloud State University offers two nursing programs that are available students entering college for the first time and offers a post-graduate option. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a traditional nursing undergraduate program consisting of 71 hours of course work that will prepare graduates for a career in nursing and health care. The Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing Program is a 16-month program consisting of a heavy workload that is meant for students who have a bachelor's degree in a subject area other than nursing. That option is often ideal for those wanting to change their profession to nursing after college.
