Port-Au-Prince Medical Schools

The development of medical education in Haiti has been disrupted many times over the years by political unrest and natural disasters including the devastating earthquake in 2010. This means the country has many fewer medical schools and medical graduates than might be expected for the size of its population. However, the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, is home to the country's three surviving medical schools.
  1. Universite Catholique Notre Dame d'Haiti

    • Université Catholique Notre Dame d'Haiti (UNDH) offers a seven-year medical degree at its Faculty of Medicine. The first year is based in fundamental sciences and mathematics necessary for higher study. Emphasis is also placed on general cultural knowledge, social sciences and ethics. Study of medicine itself begins in the second year. In their final year, students undertake an internship at a local medical facility.

    Université d'État d'Haiti

    • Haiti's oldest medical school, the facility at the State University was founded in 1861, and for a long time was the country's only source of medical education. The program encompasses ten semesters of academic work, followed by an internship at Port-au-Prince's major hospitals or in community medicine. There are also post-graduate specialization courses, as newly graduated doctors become residents at area hospitals. The medical school offers a diploma course for pharmacists and for laboratory technicians.

    Universite Quisqueya

    • This private university in Port-au-Prince has a particular concentration within its medical school on community medicine and public health projects. The medical college at one time offered a master's in Public Health in addition to its medical degrees. Its electronic medical library was linked to Cornell University Medical Library, allowing students access to those resources. The university buildings were almost completely destroyed by the January 2010 earthquake, but the institution has survived, and students are once more being enrolled.
