Deciding to attend medical school can be challenging, particularly if you have been out of school for several years. Several major medical schools have openly encouraged the enrollment of non-traditional older students in the belief that older students have a great deal to offer as a result of their life experience, working experience and maturity.
  1. University of Mississippi School of Medicine

    • Located in Jackson, Mississippi, the University of Mississippi School of Medicine services approximately 2200 students. The school's medical program consists of four academic sessions, with the first two years focusing on lecture based fundamentals of medicine and the last two focusing on clinical exposure and required internships.

    Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

    • The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine is ranked among the nation's top 25 medical schools in primary care by U.S. News & World Report. In addition to half of its students being women, the College of Human Medicine openly accepts older students. While the average student at the College of Medicine is 25 years of age, the school also instructs students in their 30's and 40's. The school's program consists of a three-block program that focuses on biological and behavioral sciences, clinical practices and required medical externships at one of the facility's approved health care sites.

    • Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Drexel University College of Medicine puts an emphasis on accepting diverse applicants, with women, older students and under represented minorities encouraged to apply. With a population of over 1000 students, Drexel University is the largest private medical school in the U.S. and was ranked as one of the top-21 National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health. Drexel University offers its medical students early exposure to clinical practice and a fourth-year pathway program that focuses greatly on discipline-specific course work and clinical participation with rotations in specialties such as obstetrics and gynecology, general medicine, surgery, family medicine, psychiatry and pediatrics.

    University of Kentucky College of Medicine

    • Located in Lexington, Kentucky, the University of Kentucky College of Medicine welcomes a diverse range of applicants, with 25 percent of its applicants averaging 25 years of age or older. In 2010, the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine program was ranked as one of the top twenty medical schools in the U.S. in recognition of its focus on care toward underserved areas and underrepresented minorities. The school's four-year program offers advanced placement options in addition to strong focus on interpersonal communication, behavioral medicine and professionalism.
