NIH Funding for Medical Schools

University of Michigan

• The University of Michigan is based in Ann Arbor and is among the top 10 medical schools in the nation. According to the university’s website, the medical school is ranked eighth as NIH’s funding recipients for 2009. Funds from the NIH are used to advance scientific research and innovation by investing in the school’s academic and scientific departments. The grants are also used to improve clinical study and treatment centers and teaching facilities, and will be used toward advancing the careers of post-doctoral fellows, young scientists and research teams.

  In addition, the NIH awards “challenge grants” to medical schools in order to advance fields that require improvements in areas such as new technologies, data generation or research methods. The largest amount of funding that the school of medicine has received from NIH has been committed to the Southwest Oncology Group, which is one of the largest cancer clinical trail centers in the country. Other areas that have received a significant amount of funding include the field of neurological emergency treatment trials.

University of San Francisco

• According to the San Francisco Business Times, the University of San Francisco’s School of Medicine is the third largest recipient of NIH funding. The grant is awarded to fund the school’s research, training and fellowships for post-doctoral candidates. The schools of dentistry, pharmacy and nursing have consistently received first place in NIH awards for 2007. The funds are distributed to promote research and development in various departments at the medical school, particularly to further innovations in the treatment, cure and prevention of illness.

• Stanford University is one of 38 research centers nationwide to become a member of NIH’s five-year Clinical and Translational Science Award Consortium (CTSA).
