The Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, ranked 24th in the nation for research in the 2010 "U.S. News & World Report" survey of medical schools. The private college has access to more than $300 million in funding and trains more than 3,000 students at any one time. Programs include medicine, nurse anesthesia and graduate courses. The College of Medicine at Texas A&M has been training students in medicine since 1977, and its alumni now number more than 1,400 physicians. Students study for either an M.D. degree or a joint M.D/M.B.A. degree offered through a partnership with the university’s Mays Business School. Graduate students can work toward a doctorate. Undergraduate students follow high-quality courses in both basic science and clinical science. The college also hosts six research centers, including the Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the J.L. Huffines Institute for Sports Medicine and Human Performance.

The Health Sciences Center at Texas Tech operates on six sites across Texas, including facilities in El Paso, Amarillo and Dallas. Over almost 40 years, Texas Tech has trained more than 10,000 health care professionals. The 450 faculty members make Texas Tech physicians the largest group practice in West Texas, holding a wide range of specialties and sub-specialties. The center offers courses in nursing, pharmacy, medicine, allied health sciences and biomedical sciences.

The University of Texas system offers courses in medicine at its campuses in Houston, Galveston, San Antonio and Dallas. At Houston, for example, students can study for an M.D. and supplement their courses by taking part in either the summer research program or the summer medical and dental education program.
