List of Dance Universities in Texas

Texas has a variety of university-level dance programs offering bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. A degree in dance provides the technical aspects of movement, history of dance, choreography and how to teach dance and movement theory. The goal of a fine arts degree in dance is to prepare you for a professional career with a dance company or as a dance instructor. Texas boasts many universities with nationally competitive programs.
  1. Central-South Texas

    • The University of Texas at Austin maintains a theater and dance department through its College of Fine Arts. Students can receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance and a Master of Fine Arts in dance. It also has a doctoral program for performance as public practice where students study theory, practice and performance.

    South Texas

    • Texas State University in San Marcos has a theater and dance department that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance with four different areas of emphasis: dance studies, performance and choreography, pedagogy (single field) and pedagogy (dual field). The University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg maintains a department of music and dance that offers a Bachelor of Arts in dance performance, a Bachelor of Arts in dance teacher certification and a minor in dance. The University of Houston has a school of theater and dance that offers a bachelor of arts in dance.

    North Texas

    • Texas Tech University in Lubbock offers a Bachelor of Arts in dance, but no graduate degrees. The University of North Texas in Denton has a dance and theater department. It offers a Bachelor of Arts in dance and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance. It does not offer a minor or graduate program. The dance department at Texas Woman's University is located on the Denton campus. It offers five dance degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts with teacher certification, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts and a doctoral program.

    East Texas

    • Texas A&M University in College Station offers three dance programs. A student may declare a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology in the dance science track, a university studies degree with a dance concentration or enroll in a dance minor. Texas Christian University in Fort Worth includes the School for Classical and Contemporary Dance, which offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ballet and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in modern dance. The University of Texas at Dallas offers a Bachelor of Arts in dance, but not a graduate degree. Sam Houston University in Huntsville in offers two degrees through its dance program: a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance and a Master of Fine Arts in dance.

    West Texas

    • West Texas A&M University in Canyon has a dance program that offers a Bachelor of Fine arts in dance, and an interdisciplinary Master of Fine Arts that includes two other areas of study, such as art, music or theater, in addition to dance.
