The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston's School of Nursing was established in 1972 and has earned rankings as a top nursing program in the country. The nursing program is part of the Health Science Center in Houston, which includes a dentistry school, a medical school, a biomedical sciences program, a public health school and an information sciences school. It is located in Houston's medical center.
Graduate students can earn a master of science in nursing, doctor of philosophy in nursing or doctor of nursing practice. The school has more than 800 students enrolled. Each year, about 130 students complete the graduate nursing program.

Just 30 minutes outside of Houston, in Galveston, is the southwest's oldest nursing school and the oldest master of science in nursing program in Texas. The program is more than 100 years old. Several specialty areas are offered, including nurse practitioners in family health, geriatric, pediatric, adult acute care and neonatal. A specialty in nursing leadership is also available. There are also two Internet-based programs: nursing leadership in complex health care organizations and nursing education.
