Colleges That Offer Sports Broadcasting

Die-hard sports fans might take an interest in making their hobby a career. A degree in sports broadcasting prepares students to work in front of the camera and cover sporting events. Sports broadcasters are responsible for selecting sports stories, writing their content and delivering the news, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. They also will interview athletes and coaches and attend games and practices. If these job tasks appeal to you, choose to major in sports broadcasting, sports journalism or sports communications.

    • Located in Fort Worth, Texas Christian University's College of Communication offers a sports broadcasting program. Students must complete 124 credits to graduate, and at least 37 of those credits must be in sports broadcasting courses. Sample courses include Introduction to Remote Sports Production and Sports Broadcasting. Students also take a senior seminar and complete an internship for six credits. Students also have access to an esteemed board of advisers made up of sports broadcasting professionals from major sports networks like ESPN and professional sport teams like the San Diego Padres.

    Indiana University

    • Indiana University offers a sports communication degree through its Department of Kinesiology. Students can choose an emphasis in broadcasting and study in both the Department of Kinesiology and Department of Telecommunications. Students take courses in telecommunications media, focusing on television, radio and other electronic forms of communication. The degree requires students to complete 124 credits, and they can apply to the program after earning 26 credits and a grade point average of at least 2.5.

    • Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis offers a sports journalism degree, which includes a number of available courses in sports broadcasting. Offered by the school's School of Journalism, the degree requires students to take 47 credit hours in the major. Sample courses include Sports Broadcasting, The Business of Sports and Introduction to Sports Journalism: Controversy, Conflict and Characters. Students can also choose to take a one-credit internship with television or radio stations during the summer.
