The University and Colleges Admissions System (UCAS) is a government-funded, non-profit organization that manages all applications to colleges and universities in the UK. Before you can apply to a university, you must first apply with UCAS. (See References 4) Some universities only accept applications through UCAS and do not accept direct applications. UCAS will not only process your application, but can help you choose which London university and course of study is best for you. You can apply online. You will need to provide information such as education history, academic achievements and grades, past employment, university and course choices, references and a personal statement. Depending on how many schools and courses you apply for, the application fee begins at £9.
In addition to applying to UCAS, you may need to apply directly with the university of your choice. Not all London universities require a direct application, and the UCAS application may be enough. However, you should check directly with the university of your choice to see if a direct application is required. University applications may need additional references, a personal statement explaining why you would like to study at the university and an entrance exam. Some universities in London require additional essays about your course of study. You should be aware that university applications may have different deadlines than the UCAS application.
If you are an American applicant, there may be additional requirements with your application. Because of variations between British and American secondary education, a university in London may require proof of academic proficiency in addition to your high school transcript. Scholastic assessment tests such as the SAT or the ACT may be necessary if you are applying directly out of high school. If you are transferring from a two-year college, your grade point average may be enough. Acceptable SAT and ACT scores vary from each university and course of study. You can also search for entry requirements on the UCAS website using the UCAS course search tool (see Resources for web site). Once you have been accepted to a London university, you will need to apply for a student visa with a British consulate. A student visa will allow you to study in the United Kingdom and work part-time.
