Lamar University Requirements

Lamar University is a public four-year institution of higher learning in Beaumont, Texas. The university has a Program Participation Agreement with the U.S. Department of Education, which makes its students eligible for Pell Grants and other financial aid. Lamar offers students bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and has been a member of the Texas State Universities since 1995. Lamar features 63 undergraduate degrees, 47 master's and nine doctoral degree programs in five academic colleges.
  1. High School Graduates

    • All applicants are required to meet specific academic standards, which include receiving adequate scores on the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT. Prospective students must also have completed 14 high school units in college preparatory classes. These must include four English courses, three mathematics courses from Algebra I to Geometry, two laboratory science classes, 2 1/2 social science classes and 2 1/2 electives. The most recommended and popular elective classes are foreign languages.

    College Transfers

    • A student who wishes to transfer from another university will be admitted to Lamar based on transcripts. Lamar will consider all courses taken, pass or fail, to determine whether the student meets its standards. Most credits are transferable, but departments determine whether to accept a particular grade toward a degree. The student's grade point average will assist in determining admission, but will not be incorporated into Lamar's grade point average system.

    International Students

    • Applicants from foreign countries must have their secondary school transcripts translated and evaluated. Admission is based on a high school diploma equivalent to a U.S. secondary diploma. The diploma must be certified by a professional evaluator, and all applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 950 or ACT score of 20. Foreign applicants must also meet English language standards set forth by the Test of English as a Foreign Language, International English Language Testing System or Preliminary English Test exams.

    Summer Transients

    • Students of other universities wishing to take summer courses at Lamar are eligible for admission. Anyone wishing to take courses in the summer must complete a standard application and must comply with the state Telluride Association Summer Program (TASP) guidelines. Students can also gain admission by proof of spring registration at another university, adequate TASP scores or proof of TASP exemption. Transient students can later apply for long-term admission, but they must submit all necessary admission credentials in addition to meeting all entrance requirements.
