College Requirements for Arizona State University

Arizona State University (ASU) was founded in 1885, and today is among the largest research institutions in the United States. As of 2009, the student body contained more than 68,000 students from across the nation and several countries. There are four campuses throughout the state--one in Tempe, two in Phoenix and one in Mesa. All four locations offer more than 50 academic degree opportunities, including the schools of journalism, law and engineering. The school accepts approximately 43 percent of its undergraduate applicants, and has strict requirements for consideration.
  1. Grades and Test Scores

    • First-time college applicants who apply to ASU must meet minimum requirements for consideration. Several areas will be evaluated, including high school grade point average, placement in the class, and ACT score or the score received on the reasoning section of the SAT. Of these requirements, at least one must be met, though all will be taken into consideration. Students with a 3.0 GPA or higher are most likely to be accepted, and those with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 are strong candidates. An ACT score of 22 for Arizona residents (24 for nonresidents), placement within the top 25 percent of a graduating high school class or an SAT reasoning score of 1040 (1110 for nonresidents) all are considered acceptable.

    Competency Requirement

    • High school graduates with low grades in one core competency still will be considered, but those with low grades in more than one competency will not be. For admission, grades in English, math, laboratory and social science, foreign language, and fine art must be a 2.0 GPA or greater. Other options are available to prove competency, including tests administered by the college testing center or completion of lower-level college courses. All students must complete four years of English and math, and three years of laboratory science. English credits must consist of both composition and literature, while math should be drawn from a wide selection, but include geometry and algebra. Additionally, satisfactory completion of two years of the same foreign language, two years of social science and one year of fine arts are required.

    Home-schooled Students

    • Home-schooled students are required to submit all of the standard requirements, as well as requirements laid out by the Arizona Board of Regents. These students must have satisfactory grades and test scores, and provide proof of all completed credits. Additionally, the Evaluation of Laboratory Science Courses form must be completed. ASU requires all laboratory science courses be completed in the lab, and this form must be included with the application. The school's aptitude requirements must be met by submitting an acceptable grade on either the SAT or ACT exams. These numbers are the same for home schooled students as for all others. Additionally, an official GED score of 500 or higher, and the Affidavit of Completion of Secondary School Education must be submitted with the application. This form must be completed by a parent or guardian and notarized.

    Discipline-specific Requirements

    • These are standard requirements for admittance to the college, and some schools within ASU have higher standards. To learn about program-specific needs, a full list can be found at the ASU website by running a Degree Search to find a specific department or major. Rejected students are able to resubmit or appeal, but the ASU admissions office makes the final decision.
